Get to Know Us!
We continue with our “Get to Know Us” section, and today we have the pleasure of learning a bit more about Mr. Manu, the Preschool Education Coordinator. Here is a short interview with him:
Something about me:
My name is Manuel Conde-Corbal, although most people know me as Manu or Mr. Manu. I am Galician by birth, from the city of Ourense. Since I was a child I have been passionate about sports, especially basketball, which became my profession for more than a decade, an experience that allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. However, a serious knee injury led me to rethink my career and focus on my true vocation: teaching.
How long have you been at Atalaya?
This is my fifth year at Atalaya International School, a place where I have grown very much, both personally and professionally. During my first years, I was a form teacher for the 3-, 4- and 5-year-old classes, accompanying the children at different key stages of their development. This year I have taken on the role of Preschool Education Coordinator, a position which gives me the opportunity to work closely with all the children at this stage, as well as with the families and the teaching staff to ensure the best development of each child.
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
In addition to my interest in sport, ever since I was a child I have always been interested in helping others. My father and grandfather, both doctors, were a constant example of dedication and passion for the wellbeing of others. Although my professional career took a different path, I discovered in education a wonderful way to contribute to the development of children. The possibility of guiding them, instilling values and witnessing how they evolve at such a crucial stage as these early school years is something I find deeply fulfilling.
What did you study and what is your training?
I studied Early Childhood Education at the University of Vigo, which I initially combined with my sporting career. After my injury, I decided to focus entirely on my studies, prioritising my academic preparation. Once I finished my university studies, I moved to London with the aim of perfecting my English and opening up new job opportunities. For almost 7 years, I worked as a teacher in multicultural schools, an experience that greatly enriched my way of teaching and my educational vision. Throughout my career, I have also taken numerous specialisation courses which have allowed me to perfect my methodology and adapt to the needs of each child.
What do you like most about your job?
What I love most about my job is being able to witness children’s growth and development first hand. Their purity, curiosity and unconditional love are a constant source of inspiration. I greatly enjoy seeing the amazement in their faces when they discover something new, their happiness when they overcome a challenge or the satisfaction they feel when they are recognised for their efforts. These moments are my greatest motivation to give my best every day, always looking for innovative ways to inspire them and support them in their learning. In addition, I deeply value working together with families and the teaching staff, as together we create a safe, stimulating and enriching environment for them.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Over the last three years, my free time has mainly been dedicated to my son, who has become the centre of my life. I love spending quality time with him, enjoying his discoveries and accompanying him as he grows. In addition, I always try to make time for sports, a passion I have never abandoned, and to enjoy a good film or series. I try to spend time with my family and friends, even if many of them are far away. These relationships are fundamental to me, as they represent my roots and are essential pillars in my life.
