Mathematics in Preschool
“The Bancubi method is a teaching strategy in mathematics designed to facilitate the learning of numerical concepts and operations in children of all ages, up to Secondary Education. This year at Atalaya International School we have implemented this method in Preschool and in the first years of Primary Education. This approach focuses on the use of concrete, manipulative and visual material, such as cubes, blocks or beads, cards with numbers, shapes or symbols, bank area and work area; where students can represent and understand numbers, basic and complex operations, fractions, percentages, the decimal system, powers, roots, and pre-algebra.
The name ‘Bancubi’ comes from the combination of the words ‘bank’ and ‘cubes’, as this method uses a kind of bank area and a work area where children can manipulate all the material. This method has an organizational structure and rules of work, some examples of which are: everyone has their own rhythm, you can reach the same result in many ways, you can observe your classmates and you can help if necessary, everything is correct and, although it is personal and individual work, it is also cooperative work.
By using these physical resources, children can visually and tangibly experience abstract mathematical concepts, helping them to better understand and develop fundamental numerical skills. The Bancubi method encourages hands-on learning, active participation and the development of problem-solving skills from an early age, laying the foundation for a solid mathematical understanding for building complex mathematical concepts in later stages of education.”
