Letters to Juliet: A Project by the Atalaya Club
This academic year, the 3rd-year ESO students at Colegio Atalaya embarked on a heartfelt and inspiring project inspired by the tradition of the Club di Giulietta in Verona. Eager to express their feelings and reflections on love, they established their own Atalaya School Club, actively participating by writing letters and promoting the initiative throughout the school.
The project adopted an interdisciplinary approach. Within the Language department, students learned to composeletters correctly, understanding the importance of structuring their ideas clearly, paying attention to spelling, and adapting the tone according to the communicative purpose. Mastering letter writing remains an essential skill today, enabling individuals to express emotions, request information, or convey messages effectively and personally.
To encourage broader student participation, they designed informative posters featuring a QR code linking to Shakespeare’s story, which had been read during Language class reading sessions, allowing anyone to access it.
In collaboration with the Art department, they also created decorated mailboxes where students could deposit their writings. It provides a symbolic space for expression. The initiative quickly spread throughout the school, with 1st and 2nd-year ESO students also joining in by sending letters, further enriching the project.
Trip to Verona
The magic of the project didn’t end there. The Language teacher, during a trip to Verona with the high school class, took all the letters and placed them in the mailbox at Juliet’s House, thus connecting the students’ efforts with the decades-long tradition that has inspired people worldwide.
Now, all participants eagerly await responses to their letters. They are full of hope and curiosity about the replies from the Club di Giulietta. This project has been an enriching experience, blending literature, creativity, and emotion. It allow students to engage with writing in a meaningful and personal way. Undoubtedly, an initiative that has left a lasting impact at Colegio Atalaya.
